# Running in pairs, the Tulevieja and an unforgettable experience

**It was six in the afternoon on the cold slopes of Cerro del Ochomogo. The daylight had been reduced to a barely perceptible line on the horizon and inevitably the shadow of night, with all its mysteries, was about to dominate everything. And there I was, defenseless before the immensity of the mountain and with the typical adrenaline before starting a race, ready to run 10k with my partner.**

A couples race? But who would come up with such a thing! Not only that; a couples race, at night and through trails of dust, roots and pastures. That's La Angelina en Parejas, a race organized by Costa Rica Ecogreen that held its third edition last Saturday. There we were then, 120 couples of boyfriends and girlfriends, siblings, friends, spouses, uncles or whatever because any couple of any kind was allowed. And the adventure of La Angelina en Parejas began...

Headlamps turned on, a little water and off we went. The first five kilometers were almost all uphill. Barely 10 minutes later I looked back and saw the first of many scenes I had the privilege of witnessing that night that would leave me enchanted: a snake of lights made its way up the mountain in an "S" shape and in the distance the distant lights of the city. That view alone was worth the adventure, but the best was yet to come.

I say all races should be in couples. The bond that forms between two people after running an adventure like that together lasts for a lifetime. In the middle of the climb, breathless and with legs burning from the effort, you could see runners pushing their partner, voices cheering on their companion and among everyone there was a spirit that no solo race could ever imitate.

Until suddenly a terrifying scream echoed through the forest. There's always someone crazy enough to release their energy with tasteless jokes. That thing sounded like a cry coming from the jaws of the Cadejo, the Mico Malo, the Llorona and the Cegua all together. In fact, I'm still not sure if it was the scream of a person or the voice of the mountain itself complaining about so many footsteps in its depths. The thing was that from then on we all ran faster, at least until the downhill came.

What a terrible thing to have to descend at night through roots, ditches and rocks! The headlamp barely lit a meter ahead and I only saw the other couples pass like goats on a cliff. My partner and I had climbed quite well (even more so after the scream of the Tulevieja), but the descent proved to be at a technical level not suitable for beginners. In the end we descended carefully and arrived with all our ankles and our heads in place (defying initial predictions).

But more than that, we arrived united by an unforgettable adventure. Not only united between the two of us but with all the crazy people who lived the same adventure that same night. A madness that can only be lived in couples... See you next year.
