# This is the tennis brand preferred by Costa Rican runners...

**A runner's entire system—their musculature, technique, posture, and effort with every step—depends on one element, one artifact, one marvelous invention that puts our feet on the ground: running shoes. How those shoes are designed is enormously important, not only for performance but also to prevent injuries after so much harsh pounding against asphalt, concrete, stone, dirt, or sand, and to keep us comfortable during the long journey**.

What is the preferred running shoe brand among Costa Rican runners? The relationship a runner develops with their shoes, and consequently with the brand that makes them, is very intimate. If we consider that a runner takes about 180 steps per minute, we could roughly calculate that our shoes will withstand between 400,000 and 600,000 impacts against the ground throughout their useful life—what a huge responsibility!!!

More than 4,400 people participated in a survey we conducted at A Buen Paso, in which we asked "What is your preferred running shoe brand?". By far, the most popular brand was... (drumroll please)... Asics. Almost 40% of users prefer Asics for running, while Nike (12%), Adidas (12%), and New Balance (11%) show a technical tie in preferences.

Brands like Brooks and Saucony also have significant presence in the Costa Rican market, with 9% and 7% respectively. Slightly behind come brands like Mizuno (4%), Newton (2%), Salomon (1%), and Zoot (<1%).

All these brands have a specialized line of running shoes, and quality is usually very good due to the boom that recreational athletics has experienced worldwide over the last decade. Although the survey didn't delve into the reasons, it's possible that the overwhelming preference for Asics is associated with it being the flagship brand of Runners stores, one of the first and most popular specialty stores for runners that existed in Costa Rica. In the United States and the rest of the world there isn't such a marked preference for Asics, and brands like Brooks, Adidas, and Nike sometimes dominate the market.

Beyond the brand, it's very important that you know[what type of shoe suits your running gait and how to choose it](../../../New/detail/19/el-dilema-de-los-tenis) to prevent injuries and run as comfortably as possible.
