Gustavo Álvarez, director of the Correcaminos race, confirmed to A Buen Paso that the Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10k Correcaminos is going ahead and will have the necessary road safety measures so that participants can run with peace of mind.
This despite the fact that the Traffic Engineering Department (DIT) sent them a statement indicating that the event does not have the required permits and that this entity will not provide coverage for the race, meaning they will not send officers to regulate intersections and provide safety to runners during the course.
"We guarantee road safety for runners on Sunday," Álvarez confirmed. "In previous editions, police coverage (traffic police) has been quite limited, so years ago we realized we had to provide (road safety) with our own resources," he explained.
Álvarez assured that on Sunday they will have the support of 200 Public Force officers, plus 100 private officers they have hired and 75 volunteers at intersections. "Since we requested the permit, they (Traffic Engineering) started having problems; at first they said yes, then they said no (...). Given so many inconsistencies, we assumed they weren't going to grant it (the permit) and we prepared ourselves," said Álvarez.
"Honestly, it's very disappointing as a citizen (that DIT is not providing coverage for the event), it seems like we are second-class citizens; someone coming back from the beach has more security than someone who runs," complained Álvarez, alluding to the justification DIT gave them that they didn't have enough officers due to operations they would be conducting on Route 27 for people returning from vacation.
The marathon and half marathon will start on Sunday at 5 a.m., the first from Cartago and the second from Tres Ríos. The 10k distance will start at 8:30 a.m. from Barrio Luján.
